{\noindent Gentlemen:}

I am enclosing a check for $\$$400 as a deposit for the two rooms that I
reserved by telephone today.

One room with twin beds is for my two daughters, Mrs Donna E. Hussain and
Mrs Margaret L. Finch, who will be arriving separately on Saturday August
6, 1983 and leaving on Friday August 12th. The second room, a single, will
be for me and I will be arriving on Monday August 8th and I will be
leaving with my daughters on Friday August 12th.

Please note that I will be attending the IJCAI conference. I had
requested hotel reservations through this organization some time ago but
apparently this earlier request has not been forwarded to you. In any
event, this reservation supersedes the earlier request.

{\noindent Dear Miss Thomen:}

I am enclosing a check for $\$$800 as the deposit for cabin A-10 on
the August 18th 1983 Waterways of Western Europe trip. This reservation
applies to the European portion only less the transatlantic fare which
will be arranged independently.

As I told you on the phone, I will now occupy this new cabin and my two
daughters Donna E. Hussain and Margaret L. Finch will occupy cabin V-1, which
had already been reserved.

We will all three plan to join the group at the Hotel Inter-Continental on
August 19th, and will, of course, want rooms for that night.

I have already made an independent arrangement to fly back
to the U.S. on the same flight that you use, Margaret will stay in Europe
and Donna's plans are not yet firm but she will probably return via another route.

{\noindent Dear Mr. Siekmann:}

I am returning the reservation form for IJCAI-83 together with a check for
$\$$185 to cover my reservation for the conference and for three
reservations for the Tuesday evening Culinary Journey.

The reservation form does not seem to make any provision for family
members who would like to attend the opening reception on Monday evening.
Two members of my family would like to attend this affair, when, I believe,
the 1983 Distinguished Service Award is to be presented to me. Would you
please advise me on this matter.

I would like to reserve one double room for my daughters,
Mrs. Donna Hussain and Mrs. Margaret Finch and one single room for myself at
the Park Hotel, with the Hilton Hotel as a second choice. The single
room will be for arrival on Monday August 8th and leaving on Saturday
August 13th and the double room will be for arrival on Monday August 8th
and leaving on Wednesday August 10th.

This is in reply to your recent request for information regarding \WEB\ and
\TEX .

The \TEX\ system, now known as
\TEX82, is copyrighted but it is made freely available to users at the
nominal reproduction costs. The program on magnetic tape and some printed
documentation may be ordered from an approved outside supplier.

I am enclosing an order form for your use. I am also enclosing a sheet
containing some \TEX82 Installation Notes. This latter is now rather out
of date, but it will give you an idea of the work that is involved in
installing \TEX82 on your system. Not mentioned on either sheet is the
fact that Professor Knuth has recently written a users manual to appear in
book form under the title ``The \TEX book''.

In replt to your specific question regarding ``The \WEB\ System of
Structured Documentation'', this is the document referred to on the order
form as simply \WEB\ and the detailed code for this system is contained on
the standard \TEX\ distribution tape.

From your letter, I judge that you are mainly interested in printed
information. The available information together with the actual programs
may be ordered from an outside supplier. I am enclosing an order form
that you may use to order those items that you require.

Professor Knuth has written a users manual to be published as ``The
\TEX book''. You may find this book to be of value and you may wish to
obtain a copy when it becomes available.

{\noindent Dear Dr. Heusler:}

In reply to your letter of March 25, 1983. the \TEX\ system, now known as
\TEX82, is copyrighted but it is made freely available to users at the
nominal reproduction costs.

In answer to your specific questions, \TEX82 has been or is currently
being installed on a number of TOPS10 and VAX(VMS) systems and it is
currently being used with many different kinds of printers. As mentioned
in the Installation Notes, change files are needed for different operating
systems and different drivers are needed for the various printers. By
now, there is a fairly lively exchange of information going on among
\TEX82 users and you should not have any trouble in locating a driver
program for almost any printer that you might want to use.
